About this project

At the toe of the 50-acre James Berry Vineyard, this agricultural structure was conceived as an armature: it carries a photovoltaic roof, collects rainfall for irrigation, and shelters workshop space, farming vehicles and livestock supplies.

The primary structure is welded Schedule 40 reclaimed drill-stem pipe in 2, 3 and 3.5-inch diameters, left to weather naturally, braced by rod cross-bracing and tension-only frames. Laminated glass solar modules serve as both roofing and power plant, cutting roughly 88,697 kWh of purchased electricity per year.

Salvage does more with less throughout: barn doors are clad in weathered steel off-cuts saved from the adjacent winery's shoring walls, fitted in a calico pattern to odd-shaped panels. Standing sentry at the entry to the property, the barn is fully self-sufficient and operates independently of the grid.
